Sun City Staff Village Cuts Energy Use with Solahart Solar Water Heating
Decentralised Solar Hot Water System Delivers 77% Energy Savings for Staff Accommodation.
Detailed Case Study
Client: Sun International – Sun City Resort
Location: North West Province, South Africa
Industry: Hospitality & Staff Accommodation
Challenge:
Sun City Resort houses most of its staff in on-site accommodation ranging from 1–4 bedrooms. The existing centralized boiler system was inefficient and costly. The resort needed a sustainable solution to reduce energy consumption, improve its Heritage® rating, and demonstrate measurable savings.
Solution:
Solahart redesigned and decentralised the hot water delivery system, replacing the old boiler/ring main setup with Solahart 302KF solar water heating systems. Real-time data logging and monitoring were installed for performance tracking.
System Details:
- Hot Water Requirement: 65,100 litres/day at 55°C
- Solar Collectors: 434 x Solahart KF Collectors (802.9 m² total)
- Storage: 217 x Solahart 300L J Tanks (65,100 litres total)
- Boosting: Electric
Results:
- Energy Savings: 838,054 kWh annually
- Efficiency Gain: Energy consumption reduced by 77% (from 7.19 kWh/100L to 1.62 kWh/100L)
- Electricity Supply Reduction: 66%
- Environmental Impact: Significant reduction in grid dependency
