NSW battery rebate: How does it work and am I eligible?

From November 1 2024, government incentives are available for installing a solar battery in New South Wales. The NSW Government’s Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS) aims to encourage home and business owners with solar power to install a home battery storage system to:

  • Maximise the use of their solar energy; and
  • Reduce reliance on the grid in peak periods.

How does the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme work?

The PDRS works as an upfront discount, provided by an approved supplier during the installation process. Approved suppliers, known as Accredited Certificate Providers (ACPs), are accredited by the Scheme Administrator to conduct installations and upgrades under PDRS.

Solahart is an ACP. There are two incentives available:

  • Upfront discount for the installation of a new battery.
  • Rebate for connecting an existing battery to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). A VPP is a network of connected solar batteries. These can be coordinated to work together to form a large bank of controllable solar energy, helping stabilise the grid and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

How much could I receive?

The larger the battery in kilowatt-hours (kWh), the larger the incentive. Eligible homes and businesses could receive:

  • Between $770 and $1,150 off the upfront cost of a new 6.5kWh battery.
  • Between $1,600 and $2,400 off the upfront cost of a new 13.5kWh battery.

Who is eligible?

Any size home or business can tap into this incentive. Here are the key criteria for eligibility:

  • You need to have solar panels installed. If you don’t currently have a PV system, you can still be eligible if you have solar and the battery installed simultaneously.
  • Your battery must be installed by an approved supplier.
  • Your battery needs to be within a nominal capacity of 2 kWh to 28 kWh. All batteries in the Solahart range are eligible, with different solutions for different energy needs.
  • The rebate only applies for new battery installations. If you already have a battery, you can still claim an incentive by connecting your system to a VPP.

How do I get started?

Solahart is your one-stop renewable shop, with you every step of the way. We will work with you to identify whether a battery is right for your home and which solution is suitable for your needs. As an approved supplier, Solahart can then conduct the installation under the PDRS, helping you save on your upfront costs.
